Main Purpose of the Role

The Sports & Societies Officer is a part-time, voluntary, elected student representative who will champion campaigns related to sports at the University, and actively encourage members feedback to ensure that they are represented to the University and the Students’ Union

As the Students’ Union Sports & Societies Officer, you will:

  • Be an Ambassador for the Students’ Union, safeguarding its good name and values
  • Be a member of the Students’ Union Executive Committee, attending all meetings, holding the President to account and advocating on behalf of all students involved in sports and societies at the University
  • Be the lead officer for supporting, representing and overseeing the Union’s sports clubs and societies
  • Facilitate the SU Sports Forum and SU Societies Forum to include all sports captains and society chairs
  • Lead and work with all team captains to promote good sportsmanship, camaraderie and excellent discipline within University sports
  • Work closely with the Union Sports Development Manager to ensure the student voice is heard in relation to the provision of sporting excellence at the University
  • Work closely with the President and Vice Presidents to ensure all barriers to access are removed and that all students have fair access to sports clubs and societies
  • Attend mandatory Active Bystander training and provide peer-to-peer support on calling out negative behaviours
  • Champion sport, fitness and wellbeing and actively promote the benefits of sports to all students, and actively encourage all students to either participate in or support sports at the University
  • To champion excellence in sporting activities by improving standards across areas such as discipline and training
  • Encourage students to come forward with new ideas for sports clubs and societies and promote participation
  • To campaign throughout the year on matters related to sports, facilities, behaviour and other relevant initiatives
  • Work with Union staff to allocate all sports clubs and societies their annual budgets
  • Actively promote all sporting and society events and ensure the results of all sporting and society events are relayed to the student body and externally via the website and other social media channels
  • Ensure a commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion across all Students’ Union activities
  • Provide student representation on University committees as required
  • Work closely with the Students’ Union staff and the elected officers to support the effective management of the Students’ Union
